Smartheter
Antibiotic resistance is driven in part by the routine treatment of suspected urinary tract infections in catheterized patients, where the usual symptoms are hidden and laboratory confirmation takes days. This report presents Smartheter, a smart urinary catheter that detects a developing infection in real time at the source. It builds on SCERA, a nanostructured ceramic that traps bacteria and registers the change through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A reusable electronics unit reads the signal, sends it over the internet, and presents each patient’s status to clinical staff through a dashboard and to patients through a companion app. By letting clinicians act on evidence instead of suspicion, Smartheter supports targeted treatment and cuts unnecessary antibiotic use, a concrete contribution against antimicrobial resistance.
